June was a turbulent month, but for all the right reasons. So it’s more important than ever to recognize what exactly we’re celebrating during the month of July. A time traditionally filled with fireworks and parades across the USA, it’s easy to forget about the social injustice that is rooted in American history and shapes our present day. This month we’ll be taking a step back and looking at our not-so-distant colonial past. We break down how it’s shaped our ideas about gender, our roles within the family and how it has come to financially disempower women. We’ll also be providing financial advice and resources throughout the whole of July. Let’s get down to business!

This year, the Fourth of July serves as a timely reminder that freedom for all has yet to be achieved. Women, people of color, the LGBTQIA+ community, and other minority groups still suffer huge disparities. It’s a day to celebrate, to reflect on the progress we’ve made so far and on how much further we’ve got to go. So, let’s all take a moment to remember

Nuclear Family and
the Responsibility of Childcare

 
The traditional definition of a nuclear family consists of a married heterosexual couple and their biological children living together in one household. Consolidated in the 50s, images of idyllic American suburbia life comes to mind. The concept epitomised American values and the American Dream; it was widely accepted as the most ideal and stable family unit. It was also, undeniably, a white, middle-class and male-centered concept. While this idea has become outdated over time as we’ve seen the rise in more modern family structures, its legacy can still be felt. The idea entrenched gender roles in the family unit, making childcare a mother’s responsibility. Coupled with sky-high costs of childcare today, it’s women who are more likely to take time off work to care for children. This all results in less paid work, less career advancement and a widening wage-gap for women. Read more here.
