How to Apply for a Childcare Voucher in New York City

What is a Child Care Voucher?

Child care vouchers help cover some or all of the cost of child care for children 6 weeks to 13 years old. Children with disabilities up to 19 years old are also covered. Hundreds of home-based and center-based providers across NYC accept child care vouchers and offer child care services in safe and positive learning environments. You can even use a voucher to pay for child care from licensed/regulated providers and approved informal providers like relatives, neighbors, or friends.

How do I apply for a childcare voucher?

You can apply online via the MyCity portal. We’ll walk you through this process step-by-step.

How long does it take to receive a voucher?

There is a 30 day processing period from the time your application is finished and approved to the voucher distribution.

What does the process look like?

Step 1: Register and set up an account with MyCity online.

Step 2: Fill out the online application and upload the corresponding documents (don’t worry! We’ve got a list of those for you).

Step 3: Submit your application

Step 4: Your application gets assigned to a case worker

Step 5: Your assigned case worker will reach out to you to finalize your application

Step 6: Your application may take 30 days to process

Step 7: Enroll your child with the provider you selected

Step 8: Voucher distributed to provider

When filling out the application you’ll be asked to provide things like Social Security Numbers for you, your partner/spouse, and your children - so make sure you have those handy!

You’ll also be asked if you receive any income outside of your employment (i.e. Alimony, Child Support, Social Security) so it’s best if you have that information when you fill out your application.

What documentation is required when I fill out my application?

Filling out an application online takes about 30 minutes - 1 hour, if you have your documents ready, it will be faster. Put the kids to bed, pull out your phone or computer and get started!
