Hey friends and family,

One thing we can probably all agree on is what a helluva January THAT was. We hope you’ve been keeping safe and sane this past month - whatever sane means these days. While things at Mirza haven’t been quite as dramatic as the US political scene, we’ve had a busy month and we can’t wait to share the exciting things we’ve got in store for you.

First off, we released our white paper: What to Expense When You're Expecting: Working Women Discuss the Future of Parenting. We interviewed 1000 women across the US to understand what they think about the intersection of family and career 💭 The results were shocking - but not surprising. Check it out if you missed it, we’d love to know what you think.

And on the topic of sharing your thoughts, you’re officially invited to our new, exclusive community, Mirza Connects. A digital space where you can ask questions, find answers, and connect with other soon-to-be or current parents 💡 Think of this as a space to learn and find planning resources, vent with other people going through the same thing, and relieve some of the anxiety that can come with starting a family.

Mirza Connects was built for YOU and your interests! So if you have any suggestions or feedback to make Mirza Connects more special, please let us know. You can create an account here. Feel free to invite your friends or anyone who you think will be interested.

Black History is not just a month to be ticked off the calendar. Black History Month is a reminder of the ongoing importance of Black lives. This year’s theme is “The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity” and it comes at a crucial time. Enduring slavery, segregation and Jim Crow, and persistent structural racism has come at a painful cost to Black families. Today, with rates of mass incarceration ripping Black men and increasingly Black women away from children and COVID-19 killing Black people at disproportionately higher rates, the Black family remains under attack.  issue concerns all of us. We don’t need to be activists or politicians, we can fight institutional racism, oppression, brutality and violence in our everyday conversations, actions and choices. So what can we do?

Here are some resources to get started:

🏥  Understand the health care disparity that Black families have to deal with. Did you know Black mothers face a shockingly high mortality rate? Read SELF's Black Maternal Mortality series. It aims to arm Black mothers-to-be with as much information as possible before they find themselves in the labor and delivery room.

💼 Suport your local Black businesses, or online if you can’t find any near you (you can do this all year long really). We’ve curated posts on Black-owned startups, health and beauty brands, fashion brands, and non-profits you can support.

🗓 Attend an online event or workshop. The ASALH is holding a virtual Black History Month festival. Similarly, the Smithsonian is hosting a range of online programs for all ages throughout February. Celebrate the strengths, struggles, resistance—and the sheer perseverance of the Black family by attending one of the events.

If you haven’t noticed, we talk about the Motherhood Penalty a lot at Mirza (correction: we talk about it ALL THE DAMN TIME). And it’s for good reason. To eliminate the gender pay gap, (which hurts everyone, and yes, that includes men) we need to help mothers. Studies have shown that 80% of the gender pay gap can be explained by the Motherhood Penalty. But did you know this penalty can differ from job to job and the age you’re at?

Based on the Landivar study and its findings, this month we’ll be exploring childbirth timing and the Motherhood penalty. We’ll be covering its causes, the things you should discuss with your employer and partner, and how to change things in your home, within the workplace, and on a policy level; and expect a classic Mirza analysis of Biden’s policies - we love a good policy breakdown. We’ll be looking at every nook and cranny of the Motherhood Penalty to help you truly understand what it’s all about and how we can take it down together 💪

Happy Valentine’s! Whether you’re taken, single, or looking for the perfect card for your pals, we’ve got a few treats for you 👀 We designed 5 witty cards for you to download and print at home for FREE!

✊ Don’t forget that today is National Freedom Day, which commemorates the day in 1865 when Abraham Lincoln signed what would later become the 13th Amendment, which effectively ended slavery in the United States. Use this day as an opportunity to learn more about your country’s relationship with slavery as understanding the historical struggles is crucial when trying to eradicate modern slavery.

🐿 What are you doing for Groundhog Day tomorrow? Get your hands dirty and make Worms in Dirt pudding with the kids for a fun family activity (don’t worry - we promise no real worms are used in this recipe!)

🎂 The 4th is Rosa Parks Day! We want to share some of our most loved quotes from Rosa:

  • "You must never be fearful about what you are doing when it is right"

  • “Racism is still with us. But it is up to us to prepare our children for what they have to meet, and, hopefully, we shall overcome”

  • “I believe we are here on the planet Earth to live, grow up and do what we can to make this world a better place for all people to enjoy freedom"

That's it from us this month! Speak to you soon.
